OUGD504 - studio brief 03 Development book 1 cover 01

The fist idea for a cover is to use craft board as the cover the book binding method would be perfect with an exposed spine. The cover would be cut out and show the inside page which would have the title on it. This idea is very minimal and keeps the outside of the book very basic and modern.

Working on the inside page i want to used the blue in the book to keep it consistent and to use DIN and Helvetica. I kept it minimal to make it easy to cut out the front cover the title would be cut out and the blue strip, only wanted to cut out a couple of parts as didn't need to complicated and as its only A5 there not a lot of area to cut out. the cover could be more complicated and cut out on a lazer cutter. That how it would be produced on a big scale as it saves time and it also would mean very book would be consistent and the same though out.

OUGD504 - studio brief 03 Development pages 2 and 3 book 1

For pages 2 and 3 will be a simple design on the left and the brief on the right. working on it started of by having the alphabet all over the page, however it looked to busy and look horrible. Then simplified the design and had one line of the alphabet at the same point size as the body text in the publication. From the only type publication the blue page added colour and went well with the blue type inside the book and looked great as a whole blue page. Applying this to the page made the design more minimal and bold.

On page 3 the brief was a good idea to have on the page however the brief doesn't need to be in the book, and people reading probably wouldn't understand it. by changing it to a bit about the shop where the photos where taken made more sense and fitted well to be on that 3 page.

For the perfect image on indesign and to be printed there are a couple of steps to do. from the indesign and Photoshop workshop we learnt how to do this, all images in to be actual size this is the size you are going to use on the publication, second thing is to make sure the resolution is 300. this will make sure every photo is the best quality it can be.

OUGD504 - studio brief 03 size book 1

From look in the village and publications i own, The size of the publication is very important as it can change the layout of the publication and also the binding and printing method. Looking at the publication the handheld size A5 was more the look of the publication that looked interesting and also big publication are hard to hold and also when it come to printing it will cost more at uni and on a mass production level. having it A5 will still allow me to have white space and room for everything to breath, it just means the typeface size could be smaller 7pt and all the other type will have to be smaller. also the images will be a lot smaller. when printing a A5 double spread its just bigger than A4 so will have to be printed on A3 however could make it just a bit smaller if needed to and to save print cost and print on A4 as the publication doesn't have any bleed this could be done, however the publication will be A5 but on a mass production that could be done to save money.

OUGD504 - studio brief 03 colour Development book 1

For the colours in book there was going be 2 colours used maximum not including stock, The colours had to work with black as that was going to be the body copy and also work on a white paper stock, from the research online red and blue was a good combination with black. Tried both out and placed them next to each other to compare, the red was too over powering and too bright. The blue came out really well not too bright and i didn't over power the black body text however the combination of black body text and white stock really made the blue look clean and bold.

Putting the layout together with the image made the blue seem more brighter, i then remembered that a book called Type Only had blue text and blue pages, the blue used was more darker and dull. Looking on the pantone colours, found a dull blue similar to the one in the book and applied this to the layout and it came out well and sited well with the black body text and white stock.

OUGD504 - studio brief 03 Book binding and GH Smith talk

Book binding workshop was really helpful at understand standing blinding methods a lot more, from the workshop the perfect bound was the binding method that stood out for me. This is going to be the binding method for the publication a simple binding method and with the exposed spine it look really modern and unique it gives it character. The craft board is also a great thickness for the cover and works well with the binding method.

G.F Smith was a great talk a really interesting presentation that gave us a little look inside the company and how paper is made and also about the company. Also getting to look at some amazing publication help inspire ideas. From the book binding workshop i was unsure how i could print on the craft board or how to show the title, one publication had a cut out cover that exposed the first page. this gave me an idea that the craft board could be cut and show the title on the first page of my publication. which also means i could have the craft board exposed with nothing on it and have the exposed spine.

OUGD504 - studio brief 03 inside pages Layout Development book 1

From experimenting with the typefaces the page already began to take shape. From the idea each letter was going to have a double page spread with the body text on the left and image on the right with the same layout on every page keeping it consistent. from the research look at other publication the layout was going to minimal with white space so everything could breath. From the typeface experiments the 3 typeface was going to be DIN Alternate, Helvetica Neue and Monaco, i started off by having just the capital letter on the page above the type however it need more it was too basic and boring a small change in the design by having in capitals and not next to each other it just gave the page a bit more to look at. next from a book called Type Only it had the page number and the artist name across the top of the page, tried this out on the layout and came out well instead of an artist it has has the name of the location this will be on every page. however at the bottom of the page it looked bare and plain. Decided to added the text on the bottom as well the square it off it keep everything together and looks like it holding everything in square.

The image on the page need to be centred and to be the same size and shape on very page as the page needed to be consistent. As the type most of the image was landscape the decisions was made to make it square this also work with the page layout. The size of the image was as big it could be with a nice size board around it to allow for the spine and also the edges for when cutting it.
