OUGD504 - Studio brief 04 final evaluation

Final evaluation

OUGD504 - Design Production
Studio brief 04 – SONY music/Only studio brief

This brief was the most challenging however a great brief to learn new skills, to understand more about digital design, to find out what digital studios do, what it is all about and what goes in to it.

We had a graphics professionals visit to give a lecture and talk about their own practice and what goes on in a studio. What they spoke about was really interesting and helpful when talking about developing both websites for phone and desktop mediums. Both talks gave us a lot of skills and techniques we could apply to our work and gave us an understanding about digital design as this was the first time doing it.

The crits with the guys from Only was really helpful and it was great to get feed back from people who actually do it as a job, they give us lots of helpful tips and things to look at which made developing the project easier to approach.

Doing a brief that the studio did before was a really good idea however it was a difficult brief to do as it was the first time creating a website so there was a lot to learn, but all the new skills that were acquired will help in the future when working in a studio; it also gave us an idea if it is something we want to get into after university.

The website has be focused on the artist Steve Angello as him and his label has been a real inspiration on a lot of the previous projects and both are creative and unique, different from other big global brands.  The style that Steve Angello and the label Size use is what the website was motivated by.

The final outcome didn’t come out as well as it should have, as hard to make a website better than the original site for the artist however wanted keep the style minimal, clear and easy to navigate. This was the first time creating a digital design so it was challenging. Next time to change the final result, it would be to make it more interactive and try to produce it as a physical website that you can use. By learning how to use the right software it would have made the final outcome look more professional.

For digital design and this brief I didn’t enjoy it as much as would have liked to, I found it hard, challenging and it became more of a chore than other projects because I enjoyed doing the work on the previous briefs, however this is probably because it is unfamiliar to me. I feel like it was a helpful brief and it has allowed me to understand digital design more. But it has also made me aware that I’m mainly interested in print design (publications) than digital as I enjoy having a physical piece of work. I appreciate the different elements that go into a publication rather than a digital format.
