RESPONSIVE
Studio brief 01 - Monotype
For this brief I had to
take a global or personal issue and use typography to showcase the topic and
make a campaign, so I decided make an awareness poster collection to warn
people about laughing gas.
The idea was to combine
image and type together, even though this is typography based brief I decided
to use photography to make my submission to stand out from other work. I
started by looking at posters that’s also use image and type, I found this
research very interesting and it confirmed my thought that photography and type
together would make a big impact.
The next process was to
imagine the sorts of layouts and the images I wanted. Then I hired out a studio lighting kit and
tried many different arrangements of the subjects so that when I came to
picking my final choice I had a wide variety of photographs to choose from. The studio lighting gave the clean-cut,
professional look I was aiming for. I
have never used photography in my work before, however I have always been enthusiastic
in the subject. As this was a new medium
to use it made this project more exciting and pushed me out of my comfort zone,
helping me gain important skills. From
the project this has made me want to use photography more and it will
definitely be considered in my future projects.
When considering the
typefaces, I focused on using fonts that have worked for me in previous tasks
and also combinations of typefaces that would work for a serious and formal campaign
like this one. Once I had finalised with
the chosen fonts, I started applying these to the images and seeing what would
work best with the layouts I had. When working on the images, this made me
realise I needed to change most of them to black and white as this made them sharper
and get rid of any cream tones that could be distracting for the audience.
The final outcomes came
out with high impact and gave off a powerful message, which was key for this
brief. I feel I have achieved what was asked for this project, I have produced
a campaign that raises awareness of a current issue in the UK. The idea of using image and type may be a
weakness in this assignment as the main requirement was type, however I feel my
designs came out strong and I’m happy with the final outcome.
