OUGD503- Studio Brief 01 D&AD Secret 7 Design boards

OUGD503- Studio Brief 01 Secret 7 Brief Evaluation

RESPONSIVE
OUGD503 STUDIO BRIEF 01 - SECRET 7

I was excited to do this brief again with no restrictions, as previously we were limited to making the result on Illustrator as a vector image. Doing this task for the second time round meant I could complete all the desires I had previously wanted to do, making me excited for this project.

From doing the last project for D&AD I really enjoyed using photography and all the steps it comes with, I think it adds something extra to my work and makes it stand out from others.  Secret 7 was an enjoyable brief to do as it gives you the freedom to experiment for your final result, this allowed me to use photography and also go back to art and use painting.  I liked incorporating different artistic skills in the module.

When I initially listened to the selection of music we were given it made me want to use image no matter what song I chose, just because I thought any of the music would go well with a photograph.  I decided on the chosen two songs because I enjoy them personally and when I listened to them it gave me the idea to do urban photography straight away.

After these decisions I went round Hyde Park in Leeds to take photos as I thought this was a very urban area and shot many different rural elements that I noticed, I took a wide range of different views and objects to give me maximum choice when it came to selecting my final few.  I then went on to pick the final photos and edit them on Photoshop to create the retro look I was going for.
The finals came out with the urban vibe I wanted, they were strong and eye catching, I made a very conscious decision with my boarders as they worked well with the photographs and gave the result a professional look.  I could really see these covers being used as an album cover.

In this brief I experimented a lot using different mediums, photography and art, this made the project more exciting to do and allowed me to create something I was more passionate about.

OUGD503- Studio Brief 01 Secret 7 Final Submitted Covers Chvrches - Clearest Blue

This is the final image I chose for Chvrches- Clearest Blue, I used this because it was minimal, simple and worked well with the song, the photographs makes you think and it fitted well with the size of a vinyl cover.  After the feedback from peers I decided not to use paint on this one as it didn't suit the song or artist. The urban vibe to the photograph matches the theme, it's what I wanted to achieve to represent the artist as their music sounds modern, this is what I wanted to replicate in this image.  I chose to have a wide white boarder to create blank spaces, this make the image the main focus point and even though the image is small the white background allows it to pop off the page and stand out.  Using wide boarders urges the viewer to imagine what else could be in the image, and this is the kind of vibe I wanted.

OUGD503- Studio Brief 01 Secret 7 Final Submitted Covers Jack Garratt - Worry

These are the final chosen covers for Jack Garratt- Worry, I picked these two because the image worked really well with the filters I used and I thought it paired well with the song.  I had a mixed opinion from my peers on the use of paint, this is why I chose one with no paint at all and the one I chose with paint I selected a more neutral and calm colour as to not distract the viewers.  I chose to split the second image into three just to make it more dynamic, I couldn't decide which I liked best so I submitted both.

OUGD503- Studio Brief 01 Secret 7 Development part 2

My main idea to develop more on my vinyl covers was to use paint to create more texture and add something extra to the images.  I played around with different patterns and colours using acrylic paint.  The aim was to have just the edges of the paint visible as I wanted the patterns underneath the photographs.  After experimenting I scanned them in and began to compose different mixes of the paints and photographs seeing which colour would go best with each image. From testing out the paints with images I've realised that the crosses and the three parallel lines work best out of the selection and the photographs of the telephone lines and the car work best with the texture, this has made me realise they are possibly going to be my final submission pieces.
