OUDG404- What is a book? book research

I went back home to my local fishing shop that I worked at for 3 years to look at different fishing books on knots to help me understand and see the most important parts of the book I need to focus on.

The main thing I need to look at when designing my book is the layout look at the book I found that having an organized step-by-step layout that can be used on each page makes it easier to follow and understand the instructions. To do this a must it to have each step numbered this make the reader understand what order it goes in also I feel that giving each step-by-step some around it will make it clearer. The step-by-step will be on one page with a introduction to the knot on the other page.

Looking at fishing book covers in the shop and online some are very simple using a couple of colours and other are really bright and bold too much colour, however I like the full colour front cover as it makes it standout on book shelf. I think will use a maximum of 4 colours looking at book cover my favourite colours together are blue, black and white also grey, white, black and red, I think the blue will be more successful as blue reminds me of water.

The size of the book is really important and I think for this step-by-step book on knot the perfected size is A5 because it pocket size and also it will fit in most fishing bags. Also A5 is big enough to fit all the text and images on each page and it means the type can still be big so it is clear and easy to read.

OUDG406- Studio brief 02 brief

Studio Brief

Design and produce an A4 two colour screen printed book cover for your given visual culture theory book to be exhibited alongside Level 05 resolutions at Leeds Library.
Your design must work as a standalone poster for the purposes of the exhibition but also as a completed jacket design including; front, back, and spine complete with blurb, publisher logos, ISBN numbers, etc. Before undertaking the design you must consider and demonstrate awareness of the constraints associated with publishing.

Background / Considerations

You should undertake research into both the content of your given book, the theory and the theorist. Are their any visual semiotics associated with any or all of these and how could you use or exploit these within your own design treatments. You should aim to identify within your initial research an aspect of the publication which you feel you can effectively communicate through the medium of a book cover.
Begin your visual research by exploring celebrated book cover design, these should include but not be limited to the following:

Chip Kidd
Peter Mendelsund
Jessica Hische
Oliver Munday
Jennifer Carrow
Shirley Tucker
David Pelham

Avoid limiting your visual investigation into only book cover design, undertake a broad and varied exploration of visual communication.

OUDG406- Studio brief 02 - Research

type only artwork http://typeonly.tumblr.com/

books http://www.uniteditions.com

For my book cover and poster I want it to be just type, simple, coloured, white space, clear and bold. I want it to have just type like the book is already however more creative and exciting to look it stand of it looking formal and plain. Because I have to use only two colours I am going to use a dull colour like grey, black or white and then and bright colour to make the more important parts standout more use colours like blues, reds, yellows and oranges. The type is going to be the main focus on the book cover and poster as it’s a modern book I am going to use sans serifs to go with the modern book.
