OUDG406- Final evaluation

Final evaluation

OUGD406 - Design Practice 1

In this project ‘Design practice’ I have learn a lot of new skills and things throughout each brief, that I will apply to the other projects to come.
In studio 01 It was first time I have every done a competitions for a art project and it was a really interesting brief and competition to done as I am really into record cover designs so it was a fun brief to do, studio brief 02 I became more aware of book cover designs and that how can influence my own work. In studio brief 03 it was really good to work in group on a project for once it was totally different from working on your own and I learnt a lot about working with people in this brief and that it can be changing however working in a group you can create so many more ideas and designs in a quick amount of time and also in the brief the task were really good.
In studio brief 04 it was nice to make another publication on something I like which is cooking, making publications and working with type is something I really have enjoyed doing this year and will defiantly continue doing it next year.
Each brief was really different and changing but also fun and I have learnt a lot from all briefs. The briefs I’m most pleased with and enjoyed the most was studio brief 03 and 04 this is because studio 04 was things I really enjoyed doing this year and having the freedom to do whatever you want was really fun. Studio 03 was so different from all the brief we have ever done and really enjoyed working and producing work in a group.

I am pleased with all my briefs and my final outcomes. If I had to do something different it would spend more time on studio brief 02 and maybe come up with more creative design I feel my final wasn’t good because I was less interested in this brief so I think that why my final didn’t come out as good as I wanted it to look. My attendance for this project was good I was in for the most of lessons and used some of the studio development days. But I mostly got all my work done at home when it was a studio development day as I can concentrate better when I’m on my own.

Overall I have enjoyed this module and have defiantly learnt lots throughout and also improved my skill even more and I feel more confident as a designer and I am looking forward to go into level 5.

OUDG406- Studio Brief 04 - Speaking From Experience final

For this brief i decided to create a recipe book at would be in a welcome at uni that you get given in freshers week. to help to student be able to create meals easy for them selfs, i wanted to make a cook as it something i enjoy doing making publications and i also enjoy cooking, and i feel this would of helped me having this at the start of the year for cooking at uni.

Im really happy with outcome of this recipe book, it how i wanted it to be clear, very simple, modern, legible and with lots of white space. and i have been able to use all the skills have leaned this year in this book.

the book is really simple and i think the layout works really well on each pages a it looks really good. also having the different colours on the each page bring it to life a bit more and more exciting as it is just a book with type. And i wanted to use colour as its something i doing really do in my projects.

this has been i really good brief as i have done three things i have learnt this year and really enjoy doing  type, type setting and making publications. This is a cook book but i feel the first year students can look at this and see what they are going to be learning this year about type and publication.

If i had more time to do this project or if i could make any changes to my book it would be create more illustration maybe on every page. or even pictures of food as i want to get more into photography and it would make it look more exciting.

Final printed book came out really well it how i wanted it to be cheap and could be mass produced to go in a welcome pack at uni, the book cost me £3.00 however could be made cheaper by i having a recipe on each page not going over two page with means you could cut down the amount of page by half and save money. from previous publication i have learnt if you don't have a full bleed image or colour the printer can cut and stable bind your book, with makes the process quicker and easy for mass production.

OUDG406- Studio Brief 04 - Speaking From Experience grid and layout

This is the grid i have used for all the pages with the recipes on them. it a very simple grid however i can be changed for instruction that have more type just my moving everything
down.

i really enjoy using a grid it makes everything so much more easier when working with type. having the two pages for one recipe give it room to breath and make it clear and easy to read. and stops it from looking like theres too much information to read so i doesn't put the reader off.

OUDG406- Studio Brief 04 - Speaking From Experience development

I have experimented a lot with colour, layout and type setting. i wanted to have each  recipe on a double page spread to help create a simple clear step-by-step instruction and to be really minimal and a lot of white space. The layout need to simple and to be able to change because each instruction will have more or less type so i need to able to have space for instructions with more type. the bottom design is my chosen one, on the left you have the name of the recipe with a brief sentence about it, and then all the ingredients and the instruction on the right.

For the book i wouldn't it to be manly type but for the front, back cover, and first page i wanted a simple vector illustrations to go with the simple and modern look of the layout and type.

OUDG406- Studio Brief 04 - Speaking From Experience typeface

For my recipe book i wanted to use a light san serif font, i want to be light so it would look delicate and not too bold to stop it from looking too serious in your face i wanted to be clear, simple, modern and friendly.

the two fonts that came out really well was GILL SANS LIGHT and HELVETICA NEUE LIGHT,

gill sans looks very delicate and friendly however i think it could be too thin.

Helvetica neue light came out the best and is going to be the font im going to use, it everything im looking for lear, simple, modern and friendly. it is thin but not too thin and it still has a bit of boldness to it so it would came out clean on a white background. it will also use regular, bold and italic in some parts of the book.

OUDG406- Studio Brief 04 - Speaking From Experience ideas

from my research and from previous project like whats a book? and from my cocktail menu. i found that keeping it simple, clean and using white space really helps to make information standout and clear to understand.

for this recipe book i am going to use the skills i have learnt in design principles, the book will contain only type no image, and i will experiment with layouts and colours. and make really good type setting, i have really enjoyed working with type setting and working with type so this is why i want to have a book with just type to help me improve my skills in type setting more.

for each recipe it will be over and double page spread. To help me make it clear and simple and to have a lot of white space which i like doing in my work.

the idea of this book is that it would be in a welcome pack that you get in freshers week from the uni, so the book needs to be cheaply made. and will be stable bound in the digital print room.

OUDG404- What is a book? final evaluation

Final evaluation

OUDG404-Design Design Principles

In this project ‘design Principles’ I have learn a lot of new skills and things Throughout the brief and the tasks in the lessons, that I will apply to the other projects to come.

In studio brief 01 I began to understand a lot more about graphic design what goes in to it, I really enjoyed the tasks we had and they have helped me to develop new skills that will use in all briefs I do.

In studio brief 02 I really enjoyed this brief ‘whats a book?’ the skills in studio brief 01 I learnt I applied them to my book. I liked finding out more about publication and how they can be made and also have my own book. This has been one of the best briefs this year, I have leant a lot from this brief and I now understand the process of book making, if I did this project again I would defiantly experiment more with the cover and stock. But I am happy with my final outcome it what I wanted it to be a clear, simple, modern pocket guides to knots.

I have really enjoyed this brief and I have leant a lot, I would defiantly do this brief again.

OUDG404- What is a book? final crit

Final crit comments

Positive comments

  •       Clear layout
  •       Easy to follow
  •        Clear diagram
  •       Good colour scheme
  •        Good Production binding
  •        Minimal
  •        Legible

I was really happy to see these comment as it most of the things I was happy about my own book and also the parts I worked hard on, like the layout, easy to follow and the legibility, and also the binding method. So I was happy to see them comments.

Negative comment

  •       Needs glossary
  •       Contact page
  •       Proof read
  •       Not sure on glossy cover
  •       Water proof stock
  •       Water proof sleeve

I was happy to see these comments as well they were many things I have thought of my self and would change if I made this book again.

Needs glossary

Defiantly could do with a glossary to help beginners in fishing to understand the terminology, however I think most people in fishing would understand it.

Proof read

I did proof read my work and checked it all but however I must of miss spell to words and did notice it.

Glossy cover

I chose to do the glossy cover as it flexible and you could take to the lake and put it in your fishing bag and if it got a bit dirty you could clean it, however I do understand that it probably doesn’t go with the context of the book, maybe a textured paper would have been better.

Waterproof

Waterproof stock was defiantly an idea I thought of doing and if I did have a big budget of this book I would defiantly print it of on waterproof stock.

Sleeve

A sleeve was another idea I thought of doing but because of time I didn’t do it. I always like Sagmeister book with the cover and think I would of looked really good in a sleeve and would also protected it when down the lake on in your pocket or fishing bag.

The comment my peers made really have helped me and if I had another week I would defiantly apply these to it.

OUDG406- Studio Brief 04 - Speaking From Experience COOK BOOK RESEARCH

For my cook book i want it to be really simple, minimal, type only, modern and a lot of white space. i want the the whole book to be simple even the cover and layout, i defiantly want to have elements of colour in this book. also in the book i may create some vector images of food as i really enjoy making vector images. from the previous briefs i have done a publication for they will also help me create this cook book this will be my 4th publication i have made this year so hopefully all the skill i have a learnt i can apply to this cook book.
