Type size
Type size had to be a small point size as the publication is A5, the point size for the body copy is 7pt its clear and legible any smaller it could be hard to read. If the publication size was A4 the point size would be bigger to help legibility. sizing on the cover is the biggest type from 10pt all the way up to 50pt to create a bold cover and it also had the room for it.
Typefaces
choosing the right typeface was pretty easy the Typefaces had be modern, san serif and legible. For the sub headings and the titles the font choice was DIN alternate, a under used typeface but personal on of the best. the problem with using this font the uni doesn't have it on there computer and even when packaging the folder it still wouldn't work to all type had to be created as outlines. This could be a great way of sending your work to clients just incase there computers do not have the fonts used in the work. For the body copy Helvetica Neue a really legible typeface so a great choice for the main body copy and also used on the folios.
Publication size
The publication size was very important as a set they need to be compacted and say together nicely when in the strap. A5 was perfect size as it sits in your hand easily but it also has enough room for type and images. and it also meant when having a double page image it would still be pretty big even though its A5. This will would lower coat when printing with bleed you have to print on A3 and cut down however with no bleed it is just possible to print on A4 like the covers was for the Publication. So with i high budget you could print on A3 with full bleed image or to save money don't have full bleed images and print on A4 or A3.
Print method, cost, paper printing size
Printer method for this publication was printing on a ink jet pinter, this made sure that all three was consistent though out each publication and also a lot quicker. Doing a different style of like screen print would take a lot more time and a lot can go wrong and would possible mean the publication would not be consistent. For mass production the ink jet or Lazer jet or lithographic print would be fine and quicker and less to go wrong then screen printing. For the strap it would have to printed on A3 however you could fit 5 per page which was save money a lower print costs. A company that could create such a creative publication with high quality printers is pressision in leeds.
Colours CMYK and spot colours
The colours used in this publication was all CMYK as it was a print publication and only a couple was printed in mass production the colours would be change to spot colours this will lower the coat of printing the publication. The colours in the inside is really plain white stock and black ink for the text and the images was left how they where taken this would increase the coat of making the publication to lower the coat the images could of be change to a duotone image which prints one colour which will lower the coat of printing.
The font cover was a grey stock and the strap was a red stock and printed on with black ink with the ink jet printer. The font could of been in white however the uni printer can't do this, but at pressision they have the technology to do that so would possibly change that if needed. The colour stock looked great a bold a lot better than it would have if it was just printed colour, the colour stock really made the black type stand out.
Stock
Stock for the inside pages is white HP regular 120gsm, this is quit a thin stock but just thick enough to stop the images and type going through the page and seeing it on the other side of the page, the paper is a smooth texture so the ink will be applied to it better and clearer. The cover stock is grey 270gsm a thicker stock than the inside pages as publication feel better with a thick cover and it makes the publication more excited having different types of stock. The paper has a bit of texture which has made the ink hard to set on the page however if it was dried properly by the print and after it will be fine to use. The strap is vermilion 135gsm a bit thicker than inside pages, the strap needed to be a quit thin to allow for the fold and to hold its shape after being folded and suck down.
Image quality
For the perfect image all images in to be actual size this is the size you are going to use on the publication, second thing is to make sure the resolution is 300. this will make sure every photo is the best quality it can be. This means the images with be clear and not pixilated, all photo that are taken should be the best quality they can be.
Binding method and copper staples
The binding method for this publication staple bound one of the simplest binding methods, most printing companies will be able to do this. The one change to the to this method is the use of copper a unique colour for the staples, a printer company that defiantly can do this is pressision as Nest has used copper staples for there publication. The binding method is one of the most cheapest methods for publication its method that can be mass produced easily with not a lot that can go wrong.
Layout
The layout for the publication was inspired by photography publications from village and also stussy biannual publication, the layout is minimal, modern, clear, legible and a lot of white space. The layout of the image really increases the look of the page making it more exciting, also the different layouts means the reader will not know what the next page will be like.
Test prints
The test prints was just printed on standard printer paper in black and white to check the layout of each page and how they work together when stapled as this was how the final out come would look. The test print is a really important part when making a publication just to check that every page is correct, on a mass production a test print will always be done to make sure everything is fine before printing hundreds of copies off.
Print finishes
From looking at staple bound publication most do not have a print finish and personally it look best that why, so for this publication there is no print finish only a ink jet print. However if the foiling at uni looked high end and professional the mean title in the middle would have been foiled but the foiling at uni look poor and would have made the cover the cheap and basic.
software
The software used in this brief was photoshop for the image manipulation, and for creating the publication and layout was Indesgin.
prepare of print
The preparation for is simple but can go wrong very easily or forget to do it. For this publication all the fonts had to be created as outlines as the computers at uni didn't support the fonts used. The main part is packaging the folder this made a folder with all the fonts used and images so when going on a different computer it means all the work can open and it will all be there. This will be a must when sending your work to a client to look at and check or when sending the folder to the printers.
Cutting
Cutting the final publication down was done by hand to make sure everything was lined up. the design of the work with the 3mm bleed allow the image to go all the way to edge of the work and not have white edges. From a workshop in the screen printing room the uni has a industrial cutting machine that would have cut the publication a lot better and perfect. Would defiantly use that in the future and the machine would be similar to one in a printers so printers even cut the book down this would save a lot of time and would make every book consistent though out every publication printed.
