OUGD504 - studio brief 01 PRODUCTION ASPECTS

Fold and layout

The fold for this project is a simple fold however its effective as it has a lot of surface space when opened for information. Having the big surface area made having the information in one area possible and makes who ever is reading it easier to read it all at once and not looking on multiple pages and confused. the minimal and simple layout improves the legibility and also stops it from look too busy.  The gate fold is a fold that most printing companies can produce as its a pretty standard fold.

stock

The stock used is off white, this reason for using off instead of white matte is that the colours used on the off white are enhanced and comes out bolder on the this stock, the backs look darker and the reds look richer. The off white makes it look more creative and unique and stands out from a lot of normal leaflets. The thick stock gives the paper texture and makes you want to feel the paper. The stock isn't really thick as the fold would be hard to create but as its only a couple of fold it can get away with a thick stock.

size and budget

The size of the fold is W 400mm H 150mm, this fits one on a A3 sheet of paper, if the the job was on a tight budget the fold hight could be lowered by a couple of mm to fit two on one sheet to save money when printing. This size of the fold is perfect its handheld size that fits nicely in your hand and also big enough for all the information, the size of the fold also allows some room around the text to stop it from looking busy and off putting.

printing at uni and print on mass production

At uni the fold was printed on one A3 sheet of off white stock and printed on a ink jet printer. On one A3 you can fit one fold however if the the job was on a tight budget the fold hight could be lowered by a couple of mm to fit two on one sheet to save money when printing and also this would make the production quicker.

test prints

The tests prints helped a lot at checking the layout but most importantly checking where the folds are going to be and making should the type fits in each fold. Had a lot of problems when folding it. it took a couple of test to get the folds right and the layout of the type. doing the test prints made it easier to fold fold the final design. This is a must when printing on a mass production as hundreds will be printed.

software and package

The software used for this project was indesign as it allows you to create layouts and setting type easily and also makes it easier when printing double sided. When going to print the work everything had to package in to a folder to make sure that all the fonts will print and that its the same design as the on on your own computer. This is a process that will be using in the real when working with a client or when dealing with the printer.

typefaces

For the Numbers and title the font choice was DIN alternate, a under used typeface but personal on of the best. the problem with using this font the uni doesn't have it on there computer and even when packaging the folder it still wouldn't work to all type had to be created as outlines. For the body copy Helvetica a really legible typeface so a great choice for the main body copy.

colours

The colours used for the fold is CMYK as its a design to be printed, for the design two colours was used not including the stock, Black and red are a classic combination that always work well together. Both colours stand out on white and off white paper so it was the perfect choice, the red was used to highlight the different steps also used on the cover just make it stand out, and black for the body copy to make it legible for everyone. however to lower the cost of printing it the design could just be printed in black it would still be effective and bold.
