Helvetica
Brief
History
Max Miedinger
and Eduard Hoffmann at the Haas type foundry designed the original Helvetica in
Switzerland in 1957.
The marketing director at Stempel decided to change the name to
Helvetica in 1960 to make the font more marketable internationally. The
typeface was originally called Helvetia, which is Latin for Switzerland, but
they didn’t want to name the typeface after a country, and so they decided to
it called Helvetica instead, which is Latin for Swiss.
Arial and Helvetica are every similar typeface however there are a few
differences that stand out “G”, “Q”, “R” and “1”. Also Futura and Helvetica are similar to each other.
One of the
main places Helvetica is used and is recognized in on the NYC subway system’s
signs and map. Massimo Vignelli created this in 1970s. However NYC is not the
only city to use Helvetica for transportation sign, Antwerp train station uses
it as well. Also all U.S. government forms use Helvetica.

Century Expanded
Brief
History
Shortly
after the preparation of the original Century roman, the two Bentons, Linn Boyd and Morris Fuller prepared a wider version for De Vinne's In 1900 ATF released the design
for general use as Century Expanded, one of the most popular and effective of
typefaces, to this day the text face for the New York Daily News.
Bodoni
It was
first designed by Giambattisa Bodoni in 1798 and is generally seen as a “transitional” font type. Bodoni was a type
font designer and this particular font was highly influenced by the work of
John Baskerville, a designer whose work Bodoni followed. The font, with its
highly recognizable a centered “Q” tail and slight hook in the “J”, was widely
accepted by printers and can be seen in a broad variety of publications and
uses since the late 1700s.
This
typeface has been used on a lot of different companies one of the most
recognizable one is the classic “CK” for Calvin Klein and also for Giorgio
Armani. And is also used in a lot of fashion magazines.
Garamond
One of the Western world’s oldest continuously used typefaces;
Garamond has captured the imagination of designers for nearly 500
years. Garamond was created in 1541 by Claude Garamond who is a French type designer, punch-cutter and printer.
In 1621, sixty years after Garamond’s death, the French printer Jean
Jannon (1580–1635) introduced a strikingly similar font that until the early
20th century was often mistaken for Garamond. And in the last 100 years,
Garamond has been revised by at least a half-dozen foundries, including the
American Type Founders Company, Linotype, Monotype, ITC, Bitstream and Adobe.
Apple created a new corporate font called Apple Garamond. It was a
mix with the classic Garamond typeface. This typeface
was virtually synonymous with Apple for almost two decades and formed a large
part of Apple’s brand identity. Almost every single product made between 1984
and 2002 used the typeface.
Futura
German type
designer Paul Renner first started creating Futura in 1924. He was inspired by
the Bauhaus design style, and his initial design which combined
geometric character alternatives and old style-figures. In 1927, commissioned
by the Bauer type foundry, Futura was commercially released in light, regular,
and bold weights. Originally, Futura was intended to be used for body text for
books, but in the 1950’s and 1960’s it was commonly used in headlines and
subheads in advertising.
In 1930 the futura
family grew in size to include semi-bold, bold condensed, light oblique and regular
oblique weights. Also other designers have added to the family, which now
stands at over 20 faces.
In 1969 Futura,
was chosen to be used on the commemorative plaque for the Apollo 11 astronaut
mission. Also Futura typeface is used on big companies such as Volkswagen, Ikea, Red Bull, Domino's and Absolut Vodka.
