OUGD505 - Studio Brief 01 Licence to Print Money (The idea)

THE IDEA

The idea is to redesign the pond note in a graphic trendy way keeping it minimal using a lot of type and some numbers similar to the designs i saw in the moneybags exhibition. I will take parts from the original design a using it in the redesign but keeping the design modern and graphic, for the security side i will use codes this will mean the note can not be copied and fakes can't be made. For the exhibition i will create a £10 note but i will also create the rest of the note family. from the original design i will keep the different sizes they use as this is for blind people which is really important so i will keep that. the technique i will use to print the note will be screen printing its a technique i enjoy doing and the finish looks crisp ad strong and will make the type look clean and printed. im plaining on using two colours but this could change.

OUGD503- Responsive Module Evaluation

OUGD503 – Module Evaluation

Projects:
D&AD Monotype Studio Brief 01
Secret 7 Studio Brief 01
D&AD Design Bridge Studio Brief 02

Responsive has been a module that has been challenging due too taking part in competition briefs like D&AD where hundreds of designers take part from all over the country. Even though I have done competition briefs in the past I have found them more stimulating this time round because they meant so much more to me and the challenges consisted of more work, this brief is also a challenge as you need to create work that stands out from the competition.

My first brief was Monotype, I chose this task as it gave me no limitations and I could do it on any topic I desired, this gave me a chance to use my extracurricular hobby, Photography. The final outcomes came out with high impact and gave off a powerful message, which was key for this brief. The idea of using image and type may be a weakness in this assignment as the main requirement was type, however I feel my designs came out bold and I’m happy with the final outcome. Not only am I happy with my results, in my crits my peers all said that it came out really well and communicated the message professionally. The techniques I have learnt in this brief- using the lighting kit, editing photographs to a professional standard and using studio photography- will help me in future projects to come. Producing a body of work fit for a political campaign really helped me in using my design skills for keeping the style trendy however also achieving a serious high-quality standard that can easily be absorbed by the general public.

The second brief was Secret 7 where I created two vinyl covers.  I found this brief more approachable as it was a familiar task, after doing it the year before. I enjoyed it more this year as after gaining a year of education my abilities to produce a creative piece of work were less limited.  I decided to use go down the photography root again as doing this was so successful in my D&AD brief.  After collecting all my photographs and selecting the right images for the final product I felt the need to pair them with some other type of art form.  This is where I thought paint was a good idea to give my final result some texture and depth; I feel that the paint and photographs coincided well together and completed my final product.  After using multiple skills in this brief it has given me more confidence in grouping art forms together when confronting a brief.

In the collaboration brief for this module I grouped with two graphic designers and produced a hair care range that is unisex, the aim of the brief was to create a product that wasn’t stereotypically aimed at a certain gender.  We had the option of collaborating with animator or illustrator students but I felt that to achieve this task with a professional style I needed to work with graphic designers. My team and I produced a hair care range that was minimal design; we got our inspiration from pharmaceutical design layouts, this completed our up-market product image. I was happy that I put in a lot of energy I managed to create a lot of the team I produced the label designs, presentation and also mock-ups. We all work really well together everyone pulled their weight and we have produced a product that achieves the brief. From doing this project I am going to collaborate more with my peers in graphic design and also in other art departments as collaborate is a great way at creating ideas and designs and learn different skills from others.

Overall this module has helped me at undertaking a brief that is open and to create a big portfolio of work for, it has also pushed me in creating professional outcomes that could work in the real world. Collaborating on big project like D&AD was a challenged however it was enjoyable working with others and producing work as a team, out of the briefs the one that stands out for me is my Monotype project. The outcome was strong and bold even though I didn’t focus on type I still think I have achieved the task. The briefs have developed my skills and I have learnt a lot that I can apply to future projects and even after university.

OUGD503- Studio Brief 02 Collaboration Evaluation

OUGD503- Studio Brief 02
D&AD – Design Bridge
Collaboration Evaluation

This brief was set to create a unisex brand in the cosmetic industry.  My collaborative group was Dan Hart-Davies and Aaron Major; I wanted to collaborate with two graphic designers for this brief as it would fit with the subject matter better than working with an animator. Also I worked with these two graphic designers as they wanted to do this brief too.

To start off Aaron and I began brainstorming about cosmetic products and we decided to do a hair care range as we came to realise, why do we need gender specific shampoos and conditioners as between genders hair is the same.  From this we brainstormed names, after coming up with a few Dan then came up with the name Uniform, we felt this was gender neutral but wasn’t too obviously unisex. Once we had the name and our product area we then began researching into hair care products, we didn’t get much inspiration from the current market though.  We then looked into pharmaceutical label layouts as we thought this would be minimal and medicine products are mostly gender neutral in their packaging so this was a good route to go down.

I designed the labels that would be on each bottle.  We chose to do a shampoo, conditioner and repair oil, the layout needed to work on all three so I chose to keep the design simple and legible whilst also keeping a high-quality style.  I am glad with the final design; it definitely follows its function and works on all three.  Once the designs were done we all started to create the advertising materials, we created magazine, billboard and web banner advertisements.  We also came up with a slogan “it’s for everyone”, we thought this was catchy and would also be a good hashtag.  From looking at an array of bottle types, a simple bottle design would work best with the label style and look we were going for. We found amber bottles that were the right weight and look for our products, after purchasing them we made proper mock ups of each product to present our ideas properly in physical format.

I found this collaboration enjoyable and an easy process, everyone pitched in and pulled their weight, which helped make the project run smoothly.  We used Google drive so that we could constantly work on the project, even if we were separate, this was really helpful as we don’t all live together so meant the work was constantly being produced and we were all kept in the loop.  However even thought we worked separate a lot we met in the studio regularly to talk about what needed to be done and generate ideas and improvements.

In conclusion I was happy that I put in a lot of effort along with the other members in my team. The final result came out exactly how I wanted it to be, this brief has also made it easier to collaborate with people and has given me confidence to do so in the future, I would definitely work with Dan and Aaron again as I think we worked really well together.

OUGD503- Studio Brief 02 Collaboration Desgin Boards

OUGD503- Studio Brief 02 Collaboration Presentation Boards

These impact boards i created for the team and Dan did the writing on them, they go through the groups prices of design decision to design concept and final product. They work effectively communicating our idea strong and quick.

The over all out come of these design I'm pleased with. We have communicated that this product is for either sex in a subtle undertone. With the use of modernist design treatment, where the use of just black type and white background just getting across the brand name and information. No personal touch that would defect from keep the brand identity of be Nuteral from either sex.
Allowing the bottles to just be bottles no shaping of the bottles that would show a hint of masculinity or femininity.
From this our group has met exactly what the brief challenges were asking for and effectively done so. As a group we I feel we work extremely well together. We were constantly in contact through messages, phone calls or in class. No design decision was made unless we all felt comfortable, making everyone's points feel valid. Because of this we felt free to disagree on something until we arrived upon something we could all agree. Which I felt kept pushing are designs further. We worked incredible well together with everyone contribution the same amount and everyone opinion mattered.

OUGD503- Studio Brief 02 Collaboration Physical Bottle Designs

For the final outcome I produced the labels for the bottles designs and printed these out on 90gsm slight off white stock, I then purchased bottles online for me and the other two members so we had a set for each of us. Once the bottles came I cut them out and stuck them on the bottles. The designs came out really well and we were all pleased with the outcome, however there was problem with the repair oil as the type was too small so see. To change this we would make to type bigger and also if the produced were to be sold in the shop this produced would be placed in a box so all the type could be on the box a lot bigger. The type too small due to the size of the bottle but it did come out very well. After the physical bottles were complete I then hired out a lighting kit a took professional images of the products to be used in are submission and to show what they actual look like on a bottle not just on a mock up on the computer. All 3 products looked professional and look like an actual hair care products.
