OUGD504 - Studio brief 01 Closed Gate fold

The Closed gate is my most effective fold. it works well because it small compacted and it has a great structure to make it easy to follow a step-by-step introductions. and i like it almost like a book how you open it, the fold has a lot of surface space for type on each page which is really good as some folds are too complicated and have lots fold so there is less space of type. i feel this fold will work really well and will come out how i want it to look.

A couple of things i need to think about when creating this fold on the computer, the fold will need to be double sided and would need to printed double sided as well. also the on page 1 and 2 i have an idea to have an image or type or even both across both pages to i need to make sure the both pages line up well and not out of line.

For the sock i want to use a thick stock as there are not a lot of fold so it would be easy to fold and use a thick stock and also the leaflet should be able to close as there are not a lot of folds. when printed i really need to be careful when cutting and fold. the lines need to be straight and the fold need to be lined up or it will be all out of shape and not look good or professional.

length 40cm
width 15cm

OUGD504 - Studio brief 01 leaflet and layout research

For my leaflet i going to create a small guide, with a maximum of 7 pages not including the front and cover. i want to create a simple clear layout easy to follow and understand, i want it to be minimal type as i feel too much type can put people off from reading it.

In the leaflet to make it easy to follow i'm going to number each step and process. the leaflet will mainly be type with maybe so images. for the colour i'm thinking of using white or off white paper, types of colours i may use are black, grey, white, red or blue. i don't want there to be a lot of colour because this may be off putting for the reader. I'm to use a maximum of 3 colours, The typeface will be a modern clear san serif to keep it clear to read. the size of the type will be around 10pt with the numbers and subheadings a little bit bigger at around 15-20pt.

the photos below are the types of layouts i am considering to use in my leaflet.
the ones at the bottom with the numbers are definitely the sort of idea i have for my layout to show the step-by-step process. big numbers with the text next to them and maybe being a different colour from the body text.

OUGD504 - Studio brief 01 fold research

Different types of folds

For the leaflet i want to use a simple fold to keep it clear and legible and fold that could be mass produced. The leaflet need to be easy to follow that one of the main reason why i'm going to use a simple fold.

The vertical fold is very simple, however this would work really well at keeping it clear and will also make clear and easy to show each stage of the design process. i had the idea of creating a ladder going up showing each stage, the ladder would represent you work your way up the process to the final outcome.

Very similar to the vertical fold, The horizontal fold is simple clear and not complicated. i would keep it the same as the vertical fold however using a different image like a river maybe or a start and finish line in a race.

This fold is similar to the one i did in the workshop in class however it has more folds than the simple snake. the idea i have for this is to have a diagram going across the whole page that you would see once you have unfolded it. A diagram show each stages for the design process. could be circle or pyramid or even a mind map with everything come out from the centre.

OUGD504 - Studio brief 01 workshop folds

today I started to look at different types of folds that we could do for are leaflet. i forced on creating simple folds as i feel this will be the best why to keep it clear and to create on the computer. i feel and over complicated fold will make it harder to follow and to put the information on it.

the three folds i looked at was four panel fold, closed gate and simple snake. my top two folds are the four panel and close gate, both will be really clear to layout my type and to make it follow. the simple snake is a nice fold however i feel the cut you make in a simple snake makes it look more untidy.

i'm going to continue to look at more  simple folds and create some more to see how they look. also i'm going to look at different stocks. from today i think i'm going to use a thick stock as i don't have many folds as it should work.

OUGD504- Studio Brief 01 the design process workshop task 01

In the workshop we started to look at the design process, we was in groups and we came up with a process we use when doing a project. once we came up with are design process we created an image that would represent the process. We came up with a pyramid and the idea was meant to represent you creating the project building your way up to your final outcome.

i felt the pyramid didn't work as a pyramid grid is the most important at the top and the bottom the least, and in the design process the brief is the most important part of the process as its the task your trying to solve and you need to know this to do and create your work.

Studio brief 01- The design process

Is to create a leaflet on "The design process" we should look at are own design process to help us, when creating the leaflet we should experiment with paper stocks and folds and find the most successful combination. thought out the project i must blog everything i do and all the design decision i make and have crits with my peers to help me in creating my final outcome.

For my research im going to look at paper stocks, folds, layouts, type, colour and leaflets.
for this project a deliverable is folded card and stock experiments. i going to many focus on these two, my aim is to use a fold that could be mass produced but also look unique and different from a boring plan fold but with a textured or thick paper stock.

My first idea that came to my mind when i got this brief was a very simple clear leaflet that was easy to follow, read and understand.
